G. Holmes Braddock Students Get an Inside Look at the Credit Union World

February 2024 - Twenty-seven students from G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School's NAF Academy of Information Technology recently experienced a valuable and exciting Job Shadow Day at Dade County Federal Credit Union. The day was packed with insights, advice, and a behind-the-scenes look at the daily operations of a credit union.

The students had the opportunity to hear from several key individuals at the credit union, each sharing their unique career journeys and offering words of wisdom. Guest speakers,  Chief Experience Officer, Federica Chalumeau, Marketing Director, Paola Fajardo, and Director of Learning and Development, Adam Albrecht captivated the students with their personal stories and career advice.

Paola Fajardo shared a remarkable story about how a simple act of customer service – doing someone's nails – led to her career at the credit union. This anecdote highlighted the importance of making a positive impression, as you never know who you might meet and the opportunities that can arise. "You never know who you are going to meet that can change your life," Paola emphasized.

Adam Albrecht spoke about his journey from a passion for music to a career in teaching and training. His message resonated with the students, encouraging them to explore different interests and embrace change. "While they are in high school, try different clubs, different activities. Take advantage of all the opportunities you can while in high school/college," Adam advised. He stressed the importance of being open to new experiences and not being afraid to change paths.

Federica Chalumeau shared her own career progression within the credit union, highlighting the importance of goal setting and organization. She emphasized the value of using an agenda to stay on track and accomplish tasks. "Writing stuff down helps you to remember and keep track of what you have to complete," Federica explained.

Beyond the inspiring talks, the students also toured the Main Branch, gaining a firsthand understanding of the inner workings of a credit union. A scavenger hunt added an element of fun and engagement, highlighting the various products and services offered and broadening their understanding of the financial world.

Ms. Perez, from G. Holmes Braddock High School, shared her enthusiasm for the program: "Job Shadow Day for G. Holmes Braddock High Schools' NAF Academy of Information Technology at Dade County Federal Credit Union was an extremely valuable and exciting opportunity. The students had the opportunity to glean from the credit union's executives who took time from their extremely busy schedules to share with students their wisdom, experience, and the mistakes they learned from. Additionally, the students received valuable advice on how they can grow as professionals and individuals. This field trip was the equivalent of a career preparation course where the students were able to learn from the real-life experiences of individuals who have achieved success in their chosen careers; these individuals additionally, were offering students real-life advice, not just a textbook response. My experience with Dade County Federal Credit Union's Gen-You program has been amazing."

This Job Shadow Day provided a unique and valuable experience for the students, offering them a glimpse into the world of finance and equipping them with practical advice for their future careers. It’s a testament to the power of community partnerships and the importance of investing in the next generation.
