Gen-You Committee

At Dade County Federal Credit Union, our passion is to bring financial wellbeing to our community, especially to the youth. Over ten years ago, our CEO Mr. George Joseph, saw a need for financial literacy amongst our youth and decided to build the Gen-You Committee. The Committee consists of twelve Dade County Federal Credit Union employees who dedicate their time to providing financial resources to the students of Miami-Dade County.

Since the Committee’s inception, we have worked with thousands of students in South Florida and that number continues to grow every year. We have partnered with Miami-Dade County Schools and organizations such as Miami Springs Elementary, Miami Gardens Elementary, Frances Tucker Elementary, Summer Jobs Connect, Overtown Youth Center, YWCA, Urgent INC., Touching Miami with Love, Youth for Christ, Community in Schools, and others to raise financial literacy awareness as well as professional development through K.A.P.O.W. (Kids and the Power Of Work).

We work with students of all ages and have developed programs or workshops for each group. Our programs are completely free; all that we require is a group of students and we handle the rest.

Gen-You Programs

Financial Literacy

We have programs for different levels of education ranging from elementary to college students. Our workshops cover simple topics such as the difference between wants and needs to more complex subjects like establishing credit. Whatever age group your school or organization falls under, the Gen-You Committee has a curriculum for them.

MAD City Money

Mad City Money is a 50-minute workshop for high school students between the ages of 15 to 18. Each participant receives an “about me” sheet that contains occupation and salary, student loan debt owed, credit card debt owed, and cost of medical insurance. Some participants will have a spouse; some will be single; all will be parents.

Participants build a monthly budget based on their incomes. They go through nine merchants in Mad City to select housing, transportation, food, daycare, and other needs. And, just as in real life, participants have unexpected windfalls and unplanned expenses.

Each participant will:

Practice budgeting as an adult with realistic circumstances.
Identify and experience the consequences of poor decisions.
Learn to track all transactions.
Understand that budgeting is a necessary step in good money management and that it isn’t difficult.
